'Chicago Fire' season 5 spoilers: Severide finds himself in a complicated budding romance amid his woes

Severide (Kinney) in "Chicago Fire" promo still | NBC

Life continues to pound Severide (Taylor Kinney) after his close call with the law coupled with the devastating news that it might actually be too late for him to save Anna (Charlotte Sullivan) from dying of leukemia in the brand-new season of "Chicago Fire."

Following the two-hour crossover with another Dick Wolf series — "Chicago P.D." — the fire department lieutenant will further wallow in his own sorrows despite his acquittal from a supposed hit-and-run charge against him. Fortunately, even before things get worse for him in the court, the truth timingly unravels. As it turns out, Severide became victim of a notorious car thief ring, which he realized a time of pondering, as back then he could not even remember what happened during the freak incident due to intoxication.

Moving forward, however, his woes are not about to stop yet. Executive producer Derek Haa teases fans, through TVLine, about Severide's next plan of action, given Anna's current condition. "When you see what he goes through [in the Jan. 10 episode], you can tell that where he's coming from is not just to help this girl, but to punish himself," he said, adding that the officer will be willing to go on "tremendous risk and pain to try to help her."

But for those who are worried that "Chicago Fire" may be focusing too much on Severide, there is some silver lining in the pipeline regarding his efforts with Anna. By this time, fans may already have a hunch that the so-called attachment that the two has developed could lead to something romantic, which Haas surprisingly egged on in a separate conversation with Entertainment Weekly.

"We're not done with that," the show exec said, referring to the budding couple. "Her treatments were going terribly in the episodes that you just watched but there's going to be an improvement, which is going to give Severide the chance to donate. But there are complications that are going to involve some serious pain on his part, and Severide, in the place that he's at following these two episodes, welcomes it."

"Chicago Fire" season 5 airs every Tuesday, 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
