'Code Black' season 2 spoilers, update: No explanation for cast changes; new characters coming in

Promotional still for "Code Black" season 2 | CBS

Medical drama television series "Code Black" will be back this month for its second season. But as fans already know, not all of the characters are coming back.

Dr. Neal Hudson (Raza Jaffrey) and Dr. Christa Lorenson (Bonnie Somerville) will be missing in action in "Code Black" season 2 as the two characters have been cut off due to creative reasons as well as to make the series more realistic. It has been reasoned that in real life hospital setting, not all employees stick around for so long in one hospital.

Thus, the show made the decision to crop the characters out of the picture for the sake of authenticity. But when the show returns to the small screen, the fans will be left hanging with Christa and Neal's storylines.

According to reports, their absence in the series will not be explained. Executive producer Michael Seitzman told TVLine that they have decided not to address the departures of the two characters. Although they did try experimenting with different versions on how they will address the issue, they felt like that none of it seemed to fit perfectly.

"We pride ourselves on the show on being as authentic as possible," said Seitzman. "By not mentioning it at all, it felt like the least offensive way to deal with it," he continued.

Ultimately, Seitzman admitted that they just "never found a good way to address it." There is an advantage to keeping their storylines hanging, though. Without knowing where Christa and Neal went to, it leaves the door open for their possible return in the future. Seitzman said that he is open to the idea of having either of the characters to make a guest appearance at some point.

Fans shouldn't be too sad though as the series will introduce new faces into the mix. As detailed in a report, season 2 will welcome Rob Lowe to play as a combat-trained doctor. Emily Tyra, Nafessa Williams, and Noah Gray-Cabey will also be joining as new residents of Angels Memorial.

"Code Black" season 2 premieres on Sept. 28 on CBS.
