Sony may be the talk of the gaming industry this past weekend thanks to the PlayStation Experience event, but Microsoft has a little surprise as well. Looks like Microsoft Studios' upcoming open-world action-adventure game "Crackdown 3" finally has a release date.

During an Extra Life livestream, Microsoft Studios art director Dave Johnson announced that the game should be out by holiday 2017 or "earlier." Well, it may not be an exact date, but at least he gave fans some information regarding the launch window for the game.

CinemaBlend's Ryan Winslett noted that Johnson's comment about the game possibly coming out earlier seems kind of vague. And he makes a good point.

"That leads us to believe one of two things. Either the team really doesn't have a solid idea of when Crackdown 3 will actually be finished or they actually expect the game to be completed sooner but, due to scheduling, might end up holding off on a launch in order to make it a big holiday get for the Xbox One," he said.

Microsoft Studios director of production Jorg Neumann also revealed that "Crackdown 3" will run at 4K resolution on the Xbox Scorpio. So, is the game going to be rendered natively to 4K, or will it get upscaled to 4K like several PlayStation 4 Pro games?

A few months ago, Microsoft Studios publishing general manager Shannon Loftis revealed that all games developed by the company for the Scorpio are going to run on native 4K resolution. "Crackdown 3" should be one of the games the company launches within the Scorpio time frame since the console is supposed to come out during the holiday season next year.

Last July, Loftis revealed that they delayed the game because the campaign mode needs work. CinemaBlend's Winslett also suggested that Microsoft might have delayed the game on purpose so it can come out alongside the Scorpio.
