'Criminal Minds' season 12 spoilers, plot news: Spencer Reid to deal with Morgan's departure; new team member introduced
The loss of Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) would be a tough one to take for the Behavioral Analysis Team. It is even tougher on Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) who considered Morgan as his best friend. He is also tasked to find a replacement for the team member as the BAU is expected to have a lot on its hands when the next season opens. Being short-staffed would find them at a great disadvantage when pursuing criminals.
The new team member is a former Fugitive Task Force agent played by Adam Rodriguez, who has starred in other shows as "CSI Miami" and "Jane the Virgin."
In the face of a daunting task in "Criminal Minds" season 12, Reid must find it in himself to welcome the new agent into the fold and pull himself together for the sake of the team.
The executive producer and the showrunner for "Criminal Minds," Erica Messer, shared with TV Guide that Morgan's replacement would have to fill pretty big shoes indeed and so she cannot tell whether Rodriguez would stay as a series regular. The next season will be a great test of the new team member's mettle, with 12 criminals at large, including the biggest bad of them all, Mr. Scratch.
Messer also revealed that Reid would still be upset about the departure of his partner in the season opening.
"We will touch on it because again, it's real. You don't just get over losing your best friend at work. That is something that changes your day," Messer said.
She explained that the loss of Morgan was not just Reid's. It was the team's loss and thus everyone will have to deal with it when the show gets back. It would be quite devastating for Reid because he and Morgan had been together for a long time, 11 seasons in fact. They had been as close as brothers and so Reid is going to be very much cut up about it.
Whether the new agent measures up is something that fans can look forward to finding out when "Criminal Minds" season 12 returns in September on CBS.
