'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 confirmed: Sequel to focus on Seo Dae Young–Yoon Myung Joo's romance?
Owing to the great clamor from its fans, "Descendants of the Sun," a popular South Korean KBS television series, may be slated for a second season.
The head of the network's drama department, Jung Sung-Ho, hinted at the possibility of a sophomore run for the show as a means of showing its fans some gratitude for their support in the first season. He shared that the network will strive to produce the new season and shall plan for a 2017 release.
"We want to repay viewers with the next 'Descendants of the Sun,'" he said. We are grateful to viewers, overseas fans, staff, and actors. The drama was more than a domestic syndrome; it established a third wave of Hallyu."
Jung Sung Ho also clarified that the series' co-writer, Kim Eun-Sook, thought that "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 was something of a burden to make but that they have been trying to make up their minds whether it will be a soldier's story. He also pointed out that, with the first season having achieved top ratings, they hope to "work on a project that will follow it closely."
The department head also emphasized that they plan to embark on a project which the "production team and cast can consent to."
This may not be quite a confirmation, but it is a far cry from the outright "I have no plans for a second season. I've already told the story I wanted to tell," that co-writer Kim Won-Seok previously announced.
"Descendants of the Sun" season 1 had a phenomenal run which gained worldwide popularity and catapulted its actors, including Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo, to stardom.
Speaking of Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo, who are the original lead male and female actors of the show's first run, it has been revealed that both will not make it for the season 2 of the hit show. The two are said to be currently making a bid for Hollywood and have very full schedules. The duo's romantic pairing had been the great point of interest in the show's first season.
With the two stars passing on the second season run of "Descendant of the Sun," it is now being rumored that the series will focus instead on the involvement between Sergeant Major Seo Dae-Young (Jin Goo) and General Yoon's daughter Yoon Myung-Joo (Kim Ji-Won), who received as much acclaim and attention from viewers during the first run.
In season 1, General Yoon plucked in the bud the romance which had sprung up between the two, leaving his daughter Yoon Myung-Joo heartbroken when he sent Seo Dae-Young back to Korea. The two eventually reunited and received General Yoon's blessing.
