'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 news, updates: SongSong couple out? Sequel inspired by CBS' 'Criminal Minds'?
The hype over "Descendants of the Sun" transcended geographical borders leaving no doubt as to the Korean series' popularity. Now, four months after the original series signed off the air, there are talks that a sequel is in the works.
There is no official confirmation yet. Everything known about "Descendants of the Sun" season 2 is all based on speculations, yet the fans' excitement over the news is palpable. With the producer's revelation that he's planning a second season for the series, many are hoping Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo (more popularly known as the "SongSong" couple), the main protagonists of the original series, will be back to reprise their roles.
There wasn't any clear indication that Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) was considering reviving the series, but a recent report from University Herald claimed that the network has confirmed a second season of the groundbreaking series. It is yet to be announced, but apparently, negotiations are underway.
The downside to the news is that the SongSong couple won't be part of "Descendants of the Sun" season 2, as both are busy with their individual commitments. Even KBS' head of drama Jung Sung-ho confirmed this. Song Joong-ki is said to be neck-deep with work for his new film, "Battleship Island," while Song Hye-kyo is supposedly preparing for a drama series opposite Lee Min-Ho.
The writer of the original story, Kim Won-suk, has announced she won't be writing the next installment, so now, an alternative plot is being considered for "Descendants of the Sun" season 2. There are rumors that the upcoming installment would be inspired by the American crime procedural series "Criminal Minds," which is aired over CBS.
On the other hand, writer Kim Won-suk admitted that he does not want to continue Yoo Si-jin's story. However, the team is still debating whether the soldier's tale should proceed further or not. Apparently, an alternative plot along the lines of crime series Criminal Minds is being considered, although it will also focus on the love story of Jin Goo and Kim Ji-won's characters.
In related news, the International Business Times reports that Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, who are rumored to be seeing each other off-camera, might possibly make a public reunion via the 11th Seoul International Drama Awards happening on Sept. 8. The couple had a mini reunion in early August when they recorded their commentaries for the Director's Cut DVD of their phenomenal drama series.
