'Descendants of the Sun' season 2 updates, news, air date: KBS torn on which direction to take for purported sequel?

Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has somehow confirmed that there will be a "Descendants of the Sun" season 2, if only to give back to the fans who supported the original version. However, as to the other important details of the sequel, the network is being tight-lipped.

So far, everything fans of the series know are based on assumptions and theories, with some saying Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo, who played lead stars Captain Yoo Si-jin and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon on the series respectively, are coming back to reprise their roles. This time, though, the two will be married and trying to balance their respective careers while raising a family.

As far as the said plot goes, a third party will apparently swoop in to challenge the strength of Si-Jin and Mo-yeon's characters. There are even talks that another widely popular Korean actor, Lee Min-ho, might be cast as the third party.

Nevertheless, more recent reports claim that the famed SongSong couple has declined to commit to the sequel given their individual busy schedules. Hye-kyo is purportedly preparing for a new TV series while Joong-ki has just wrapped up work for his film "Battleship Island" and will be starting new projects soon, too.

Reports say KBS is still considering its options, as they currently have two. They may choose to continue the story that made "Descendants of the Sun" a global hit or they can forget about that plot, find a new romantic pair to match the SongSong couple's onscreen chemistry, and use a completely different plot or storyline.

There is no denying the massive success of the series that aired from February to April of 2016. It's wide popularity has transcended global boundaries, and the awards it has won since signing off the air prove just how successful it was.

Just recently, it won the "Drama of the Year Award" at the Asia Pacific Actors Network (APAN) Star Awards last month while Song Joong-ki won the "Grand Excellence Award."
