The long awaited "Destiny 2" will offer more content, appeal to a wider fan base, and arrive as scheduled, Activision has revealed.

In an earnings call earlier this month, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg did not elaborate on the "Destiny 2" release date, but said, "We're on track and really excited for what we think is going to be an awesome sequel for 'Destiny' in 2017."

"That sequel is designed to both excite our highly engaged current players but also to broaden the appeal even further, bringing in new fans and bringing back lapsed fans," he added.

To broaden the fanbase of the online-only first-person shooter video game series and get old fans to remain interested in the upcoming full sequel, Activison has set in motion plans to address the biggest weakness of the "Destiny" series thus far. The lack of regular content releases has led to flagging interest in the video game. Since "Destiny" came out in 2014, only two expansions, "The Taken King" and "Rise of Iron," have been released. While "Destiny" has become one of the most successful new gaming franchises, it has nonetheless been criticized for its lack of post-release content.

This content drought has led many to believe the rumors that the people behind "Destiny" are experiencing technical problems and are having a hard time coming up with new material for the franchise.

Fortunately, Activision has heard gamers' and critics' comments and are working to give them a better experience with "Destiny 2." During the financial briefing, Hirshberg admitted that the massive demand for "Destiny" content has outpaced the studio's ability to meet that demand.

But moving forward, the video game publisher is reportedly working with Bungie on "a very smart approach that will allow us to deliver the steady stream of great content to keep our players engaged and keep our universe alive and growing in the wake of that sequel."

"Destiny 2" will be out sometime next year and is rumored for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Reports indicate that the sequel could be released in September 2017.
