'Doctor Who' latest news, updates: Tilda Swinton is the new favorite to succeed Peter Capaldi as The Doctor

Actress Tilda Swinton is the frontrunner to become the next Time Lord in BBC's long-running sci-fi TV series "Doctor Who."

As reported by Metro, the 56-year-old BAFTA winner is currently the favorite to take over the role of The Doctor after current "Doctor Who" star Peter Capaldi revealed back in January that the 2017 Christmas special of the iconic TV series would be his last quest in the Tardis.

According to online betting site Ladbrokes, Swinton is the new favorite to become the thirteenth incarnation of The Doctor in "Doctor Who." Her odds on replacing Capaldi in the show have collapsed and is now the 7/2 leading fancy.

Other contenders in the betting site include Kris Marshall (4/1), Olivia Coleman (5/1), Maxine Peake (8/1), and Ben Winshaw (10/1), among many others.

"Whovian punters are becoming increasingly convinced the next Doctor will be female, and fingers are currently pointing towards Swinton," Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said.

Outgoing executive producer Steven Moffat previously hinted that the next Doctor in the long-running BBC sci-fi series could indeed be a woman.

"I think the next time might be a female Doctor. I don't see why not," he said.

As previously reported, the tenth season of "Doctor Who" will be the last season to star Capaldi.

"The big thing about it for me is that it will be my last," the Scottish actor said on BBC Radio 2 on Jan. 30. "This will be the end for me. I feel sad. I love Doctor Who. It's a fantastic program to work on and it's been a huge pleasure to work with a family, really. I can't praise the people I've worked with more highly," he added.

Moffat also announced last year that he would be stepping down as the show's lead writer and executive producer and that the show's 10th season would be his last.

BBC America recently announced that the upcoming season of the long-running science-fiction TV series, "Doctor Who," will premiere on April 15 at 9 p.m. ET.
