'Doctor Who' season 10 air date, latest news: BBC releases new trailer for The Doctor's return in 2017

As perhaps a holiday gift for its fans, BBC released a trailer for the upcoming season of "Doctor Who" on Christmas Day.

The minute-long trailer of the upcoming season of "Doctor Who" introduces Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts, the Doctor's newest traveling companion. She finds herself in awe and confused with the Doctor's life of time and space travel, as well as her first encounter with the Daleks.

"I'm the Doctor," Capaldi says in one of the scenes shown in the trailer. "I will save all your lives, and when I do, you will spend the rest of them wondering who I was."

Aside from Bill's introduction and the Doctor's familiar eccentricities and unbelievable adventures, the 2017 trailer also features the return of fan-favorite character Nardole (Matt Lucas).

According to Screen Crush, Michelle Gomez is also likely to return as Missy in Season 10. "Jekyll & Hyde" star Stephanie Hyam has also been cast in a minor role. Aside from these, The Doctor's current actor, Peter Capaldi, has reportedly suggested that his previous travel companion Clara, portrayed by Jenna Coleman, could be returning for the upcoming season in some form.

The much-anticipated season of "Doctor Who" will be its tenth since the sci-fi show was revived back in 2005, but it is the 36th season overall since it first aired. This season also marks Capaldi's third time to play as The Doctor. And so far, he is only officially signed on to the show for the tenth season, so it may very well be possible that it could be his last.

What is certain, however, is that the 12-episode season 10 will be the last one for showrunner Steven Moffat, according to Yahoo TV. He will also be stepping down as the show's head writer. Following Moffat's exit, Chris Chibnall will step in as the new head writer and executive producer after the show's tenth season.
