'Doom 4' cancellation news, update: a remastered version of 'Doom' instead?
When all gamers thought that "Doom 4" is already in the works and will soon be unveiled in the gaming world, the anticipated title has not arrived. It was back in 2008 when "Doom 4" was announced, but nothing was heard about it ever since.
There have been several rumors about the "Doom 4" cancellation, one of which is that it has a different philosophy from the franchise. Software designer Kevin Cloud spoke to NoClip about the direction of the game.
"We explored a direction and got to a certain point and felt like this really wasn't capturing what we felt like was going to be a strong Doom and what the fans would want from it," he said.
"Doom 4" will apparently have better elements in terms of associating the players and the game inhabitants as it explores a more in-depth storyline. This necessitates more characters to be added in the game, aside from the enemy and the players.
The game is set on Earth and so the need for developing new characters is vital in the narrative, in which the main role will not involve being attacked by the player. Furthermore, "Doom 4" will need a number of scripted sequences, improved cinematics and better narrative. Cloud even compared it to "Call of Duty," calling the game as "Call of Doom."
The title's creative director agreed with the statement of Cloud regarding "Doom 4's" reflection of the franchise.
"To tell a bigger story, it scarified the doom slayer. Doom is about one guy involved in big things," Martin said, in an interview with GameSpot. "Doom 4 was about the big things."
The news about the cancellation of "Doom 4" prompted gaming analysts to believe that the massive requirements of the game have been too risky and so the developers are not quite ready for it. Some believe that "Doom 4" is a reimagined version of the initial title.
However, the developers have yet to confirm the speculations.
