The popular British TV series " Downton Abbey" is set to end with its upcoming sixth season, but the producer of the show has hinted that there is a chance of a film happening sometime in the future. The development follows the official statement released by PBS and Carnival Films about the TV series, which focuses on the aristocratic Crawley family and its maids, footmen, valets and butlers, announcing that the series will end this year after Season 6.

In the statement announcing the series' end, Gareth Neame of Carnival Films, who is also the director and executive producer on the show, was quick to point out that they wanted it to end while it still very popular with its viewers.

News of the show ending was hinted at earlier this year as many felt that it would be hard to show the characters aging over the upcoming years if it continued.

However, there is hope that a film might result from the series, which was created by Julian Fellowes. Speaking about the possibility of a film Neame stated that it could work well as a standalone piece and could occur either during the time period focused on in the show or before or after. But he stated it would not include characters who had died during the show such as Matthew Crawley played by Dan Stevens.

In his statement about the show, Neame also noted that "Millions around the world have followed the journey of the Crawley family and those who serve them for the last five years."

He also added that all shows have to come to an end and 'Downton' is no exception.

As for the upcoming sixth season there are hints that it will have more of the "usual drama and intrigue" that was seen over the preceding five seasons but more importance will now be provided to where and how all the characters in it end up.

Fellowes and Neame are also due to collaborate on the new drama titled "The Gilded Age" which is set in 19th Century American and is being created for NBC.
