'Dying Light' Release Date: Reviews Compare Game To 'Dark Souls', Zombie Classics

With a number of games featuring zombies, it was pretty certain that upon its release "Dying Light" would wind up being compared to a variety of others including "Dark Souls."

The game, as noted by Techland earlier last year, is an original offering completely separate from "Dead Island."

Strangely, the company did not release it for review to the press until about 12 hours before its launch. This left the press in the dark about the features of the game.

However, it seems many YouTube users with a high following were allowed to review the game even before the press as part of brand deals they had struck with Techland.

Forbes said this inability to review "Dying Light" was unusual but it is not uncommon as Warner Bros has followed much the same pattern with "Shadow or Mordor," which ultimately turned out to be pretty good. As far as "Dying Light" goes, the game has proven to be very popular since it was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Tuesday.

Many reviewers have pointed out that the actions gamers perform are heavily dictated by the "Stamina Bar" which has to be constantly refreshed when killing zombies. The action takes place on a city in Turkey where a paratrooper is inserted to find the cure for a zombie epidemic and has to kill scores of them while fighting his way through.

As part of the game, players have to kill zombies, overcome obstacles within the city and then find their way to a safe zone. Additional tasks include the setting of traps, and going on several smaller quests with other people found in a tower, which is actually the main safe zone in the game. Each quest also allows the player to get rewards. After a period of fighting and running, the player's expertise improves in the game.
