'Empire' season 3 spoilers: New season to tackle Black Lives Matter
Following in the footsteps of TV shows like "Orange Is the New Black" and "Black-ish," FOX musical drama "Empire" is set to face the hot-button issue of the Black Lives Matter movement in its upcoming third season.
The controversial social movement will reportedly be put in the spotlight via a situation that Andre (Trai Byers), the eldest Lyon son, will get himself into.
"If season one was really Jamal's season and season two was very much Hakeem's, then season 3 is gonna be Andre's," "Empire" executive producer Ilene Chaiken recently told Entertainment Weekly.
"Andre's story is the story about Andre becoming woke — connecting to his blackness in a way he hasn't before," Chaiken said in another interview. According to EW, the second episode of "Empire" season 3 will find Andre being racially profiled by the police.
This isn't the first time that the Golden Globe-winning musical drama is tackling a relevant social issue. "Empire" has previously addressed both racism and homophobia. Now, following a year of tragic police shootings and the Black Lives Matter movement gaining steam, the show is finally taking on the touchy topic.
According to "Empire" co-creator Danny Strong, the issue is something they have been considering since season 2 but had wanted to integrate organically into the "Empire" story. While co-creator Lee Daniels did not elaborate, he revealed to EW that the upcoming Black Lives Matter storyline was inspired by something his own son had experienced. According to Daniels, what happened to his son would be acted out through Andre's storyline in "Empire" season 3.
"It's a sensitive subject especially because I'm a black man," Byers told the outlet. "I have a black brother. My nephews just came to visit me and looking at them and thinking this is the world that they're going to grow up in. It's important that we tell these stories," he added.
"Empire" season 3 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 9 p.m. EDT on FOX.
