'Empire' season 3 spoilers: Superbowl ad hints Cookie–Lucious confrontation; EP teases more flashbacks featuring Lyon couple
"Empire" returns this spring, and the show's Super Bowl trailer hints that the back half of season 3 will focus on Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious' (Terrence Howard) love story.
Focused on the feisty Lyon matriarch, the Super Bowl trailer for "Empire" features Cookie holding a baseball bat. She takes her Louisville Slugger to the office and smashes up everything that reminds her of Lucious, including his framed photos and posters. From the looks of things, she might even hit Lucious himself after everything that's happened between them.
The midseason finale certainly left viewers with a lot of questions, and the recent teaser might give a few clues about what's next for the musical drama. While the clip mostly showed flashbacks of Cookie's journey, it also highlights her tumultuous relationship with her former husband. The two characters' connection with each other is just too strong, and the footage hints at a bigger storyline of their push-and-pull relationship. Playing in the background is Haddaway's "What is Love?," popularly known for its hook, "Baby, don't hurt me. don't hurt me, no more." The trailer's title, "Cookie Don't Hurt Me," is inspired by the song's lyrics.
Executive producer Sanaa Hamri caught up with Variety last December, and she shared that more revelations about Cookie and Lucious' past will be included in the story. "It's going to be about Cookie and her relationship to Lucious — how deep is their love, and will it last or will it be gone forever? We see a lot more flashbacks in which we get even more of a sense of the bond between Lucious and Cookie, and what happened in the past, so we're going to learn so much more," Hamri said.
The third season of "Empire" returns on Wednesday, March 22, at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
