'For Honor' DLC release date, news: Post-launch maps and modes will be free for all players
Months before the launch of "For Honor," Ubisoft has already announced its post-launch plans for the upcoming action hack and slash video game. The game developer has announced that all players will have access to the new modes and maps that will be released as downloadable content (DLC).
"We don't want to split the community. So everything that's matchmade [including] new modes and new maps, will be given for free to the players. We'll also have other free content. We are a big team supporting the game after launch," said game director Damien Kieken at a recent presentation attended by Eurogamer.
Players were initially disappointed when it was revealed that "For Honor" will not have offline play and that the single-player campaign will require constant connection to the internet. However, this recent announcement from Ubisoft has seemingly melted away all ill feelings toward the upcoming game.
Nevertheless, the publication noted that the game developer may still offer paid DLC for new heroes. They may also utilize a strategy similar to the one Ubisoft has for its first-person tactical shooter, "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege."
Ubisoft has already announced that the in-game currency will be called Steel and can be used to purchase items in the virtual store. Players get to earn a small amount after each match but they can also use real cash to gain more.
In terms of monetization, Kieken explained, "The idea is that we allow players to buy more Steel. It's just a shortcut. Everything is unlockable just by playing the game. And all shortcuts are tied to progression, so you can't unlock an end-game item right away."
Furthermore, players have the option of purchasing the Season Pass for $40. Aside from the content offered in the base game, players will gain access to exclusive content as well as a year's worth of expansions.
To help players decide if they want to take the plunge and purchase "For Honor," Ubisoft will be hosting closed beta testing in January 2017. Interested participants can sign up here.
"For Honor" is scheduled to arrive on Feb. 14, 2017. It will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows PC.
