BlackBerry sought to recover some of the market share it lost over the years by recently releasing the Passport. One of its main competitors is the Galaxy Note 3 from Samsung, a company also trying to bounce back from a dismal showing in 2014. Here is a comparison of the two smartphones.

Design

There is no doubt that the BlackBerry Passport is designed to be a premium device as it has a steel frame while its back panel is made from plastic. It bottom half is dominated by its physical keyboard. It has a striking square body which makes it wider than other smartphones. As for the Note 3, it has a plastic frame and its back panel has a faux leather covering that is bordered with a stitch. It also comes with the S Pen stylus which isn't as convenient as the keyboard on the BlackBerry Passport but still allows for precise typing.

Display

The display on the BlackBerry Passport is an IPS LCD screen measuring 4.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels and a density of 453 pixels per inch. As for the Note 3, it has a super AMOLED screen measuring 5.7 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 386 pixels per inch.

Specs

The BlackBerry Passport has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801chipset, coupled with a quad-core Krait 400 CPU clocked at 2.26 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU, while the Note 3 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset coupled with a quad-core Krait 400 CPU clocked at 2.3 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

Both devices have memory slots. On the BlackBerry it can be used to add up to 128 GB of external storage while the memory slot of the Note 3 supports up to 64 GB. As for RAM, the Note 3 and the BlackBerry Passport have similar 3 GB versions.

Camera

Comparing their cameras, the BlackBerry Passport and the Note 3 both have 13 megapixel versions at the rear and 2 megapixel shooters in front.

Price

The BlackBerry Passport costs $200 with a two-year contract and $599 without one. The Note 3 is priced at $149 with a similar contract.
