'Game of Thrones' spoilers news 2016: Jon Snow father latest update - HBO's infographic confirms details

Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, on "Game of Thrones" | HBO's Game of Thrones

A popular "Game of Thrones" fan theory has just been vindicated. HBO, the network that shows the fervently followed fantasy drama television series, recently posted a graphic outline of the show's characters — present by the time of Lyanna Stark's death — and the relationships between them. Also currently, half of the equation in the parentage of one important character was just confirmed in the "Game of Thrones" season 6 finale aired last Sunday.

To unravel the thread of Jon's parentage, Bran Stark's (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) vision from the past threw some much needed light. In the finale, Bran saw his father Ned (Robert Aramayo as a younger version) in a blast from the past, along with Lyanna who was in bed, drenched in blood and sweat.

"Promise me, Ned," Lyanna whispered, as Ned was handed a baby.

Bran's flashback did not reveal who Jon's father was; HBO's infographic did. Two black lines that lead to Jon Snow made it clear who his parents are.

The equation is now complete and confirmed true: L + R = J. For the uninitiated, it is Lyanna + Rhaegar = Jon. The final piece of the puzzle is in place: Jon Stark (Kit Harington) was fathered by Rhaegar Targaryen. The previous season's finale revealed Lyanna, Ned Stark's sister, gave birth to Jon at the Tower of Joy.

As to why Ned was at the Tower of Joy in Dorne is explained on HBO's official blog site. As the story went, Lyanna, Rickard Stark's only daughter, was engaged to marry Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy). Targaryen though caught sight of the beauty at a tourney in Harrenhal.

After the event, Targaryen abducted Lyanna, which was why Ned traveled to Dorne where his sister had been taken. He was too late though, as he got there after she gave birth, living only long enough to extract a promise from him. What it was specifically was not made clear during the said finale scene.

It is important to note that Lyanna's abduction was what inflamed the rebellion against Mad King Aerys, Rhaegar's father. It is what brought the "Game of Thrones" story this far.

In the series, Bran remains the only living character who knows the truth about which Jon himself is yet to find out, with only two more seasons remaining in the saga.

As the battle for the Iron Throne gets more convoluted, Harington pointed out, "Thrones is really, at the heart of it, about dysfunctional families."
