'Game of Thrones' season 7 spoilers, cast news 2016: MMA fighter Conor McGregor joins cast
Production for "Game of Thrones" is in full swing, and an MMA fighter is reportedly the latest cast addition for the epic drama's much-awaited season 7.
Conor McGregor may be taking a long break from fighting in the UFC, but it doesn't mean he won't be keeping himself busy. Reports first surfaced earlier this week when a source told Belfast Live that the current lightweight champion is scheduled to appear in the show's upcoming season.
"It's been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of 'Game of Thrones,'" an unnamed source said. "He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the 'Game of Thrones' directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show," the source went on to say.
Although the Irish athlete's reps have yet to give a statement, UFC president Dana White recently appeared on "Fox Sports Live," and she confirmed the news of McGregor's casting. "I did hear that and I knew that a few months ago that they were interested in putting him in the show. I'm glad he did it. It will be great," White stated and added, "The show's huge, it's awesome and I'm excited for him."
Details about McGregor's character in the show are still being kept under wraps, but popular "Game of Thrones" fan website Watchers on the Wall released some details about his small role. As noted by reports, McGregor will be playing a soldier on board a vessel known as "Silence," which is captained by the Euron Greyjoy, King of the Iron Islands.
Most fans are excited to see their favorite MMA fighter in his first major TV acting role. However, if the show continues to follow its original source, McGregor probably won't have any lines because of the character he portrays. In the book series written by George R.R. Martin, the Silence has a pirate crew, and all of the members have all had their tongues cut out, making everyone mute.
The seventh season of "Game of Thrones" premieres in April 2017 on HBO.
