'Ghost in the Shell' release date, news and updates: BTS video of Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi in action
A lot of anime fans are curious about the highly anticipated live-action adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell," and have been wondering as to how elements from the classic animated movie will be brought to the big screen. New behind-the-scenes clips that feature Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi have been revealed online. The director of the anime himself, Mamoru Oshii, comments on the production of the film.
In the featurette that was released, Oshii talks about Johansson and how she plays the protagonist, Motoko Kusanagi. He says, "Scarlett Johansson playing Motoko from beginning to end has gone above and beyond my expectations of the role. I'm sure this will be the most gorgeous film in the series so far."
The featurette also gives new looks at some scenes that look like they were ripped straight out of the anime. There's a scene that seems to mimic the opening scene of the 1995 "Ghost in the Shell" in which Major Kusanagi has her battle suit applied to her body. There's also a look at a surreal figure in a kimono which turns out to be a robot.
Entertainment Tonight has also provided a look of the set for the movie. The crew was shooting a scene of the Major and her partner Batou (Pilou Asbæk) in a gunfight in Neo-Tokyo. This scene alone is said to require four days of shooting.
The synopsis of the movie is as follows: "' Ghost in the Shell' follows the Major, special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic's advancements in cyber technology."
Scarlett Johansson stars in the live-action adaptation of cult anime "Ghost in the Shell," and it's set for release on March 31, 2017.
