'Girl Meets World' season 4 cancellation: Disney confirms series cancellation after Jan. 20

Riley and Maya will say goodbye at the end of "Girl Meets World" season 3 | Disney Channel

Disney Channel officially announced the end of Riley Matthews' adventures after "Girl Meets World" season 3.

The writers of the "Boy Meets World" spinoff confirmed the show's cancellation through a series of Twitter post on Thursday, Jan. 5.

"I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes," one of the posts stated.

Disney Channel also confirmed the news by releasing a statement that was reported by Variety, saying that the series will air its final episode on Friday, Jan. 20.

"In the episode, 'Girl Meets Goodbye,' the Matthews family contemplates a life-changing decision. We are proud that for over 70 episodes, Michael Jacobs, April Kelly and the talented creative team, cast and crew entertained viewers with an authentic and heartfelt look at navigating adolescence," the network said in the press release.

The cancellation of the coming-of-age sitcom did not come as a surprise, since it has been speculated even before the premiere of season 3. Early rumors claimed that the ongoing plot of the series is becoming inappropriate for the network's target audience.

Shortly after the news about the cancellation broke out, lead star Rowan Blanchard admitted that she was heartbroken with the network's decision to cancel the show. But she still urged the fans to watch the remaining three episodes of the series.

"Please continue to watch the show. To talk about it. Teens determine and influence all of this in general, and I hope and think our show reflects you for how you are: brave, opinionated, devoted, dynamic, loving, nurturing and powerful," the teen star who portrays the role of Riley in the series stated.

Disney Channel will still air the 19th episode of "Girl Meets World" season 3 titled "World Meets Girl" on Friday, Jan. 6.
