'Girl Meets World' spoilers, plot news & cancellation rumors: Disney to scrap show after new weak storylines bring down ratings?
Fan interest in Disney's wholesome and usually high-rating show "Girl Meets World" season 3 is said to have waned after characters on the show — Lucas (Peyton Meyer), Maya (Sabrina Carpenter), and Riley (Rowan Blanchard) — got involved in a love triangle storyline.
The coming-of-age television series is known for rating highly among Disney's shows, and that being so, the drop from the usual 0.6 rating to 0.3 is seen as a significant decrease and comes as red light to the network. This started the speculations that the show would soon be scrapped.
The dwindling fan interest in the show started on June 3 with the first episode of "Girl Meets World" season 3, entitled "Girl Meets World: Part 1," where the love triangle was sorted out in the course of the episode.
Lucas was set to decide which girl he was going to pick between Maya and Riley, but when the time came, Maya gave up on her true feelings for him and told Lucas that he could choose Riley. She then left the scene, even as Lucas seemed about to pick her (Maya).
Since Maya always felt like a second fiddle to Riley when it came to Lucas, she assumed that her best friend would be Lucas' choice. Maya also knew that Riley really wanted to be with him. It was a tough position to be in, but she never got the truth of it because she did not stay to find out.
There were no unsavory words or actions made during the episode, but it just seems that the romantic turn of the storyline and the involvement of three friends in it may not have been acceptable to some or appropriate to others for the show's young audience.
Disney though has made no comment or announcement regarding this issue. It is possible the ratings may go back up when the show runs more of its episodes and moves beyond the more serious and devisive storyline.
"Girl Meets World" season 3 airs every Friday on Disney Channel.
