GoPro Karma release date, specs news: GoPro's portable foldable drone coming on Oct. 23

The GoPro Karma drone | GoPro

The long-awaited GoPro Karma, the tech company's first entry into the quickly expanding drone industry, is an ultra-portable drone that folds up and enables users to capture 4K video with stabilization practically anywhere, anytime.

The GoPro Karma can hover as high as 3,280 feet and go as fast as 35 miles per hour. A 3-axis camera gimbal keeps the entire thing stable even in high wind at the peak of a mountain, where Tech Radar tested the drone.

The GoPro Karma's game-pad style clamshell controller with intuitive buttons also make the drone easy to fly and operate. The gimbal can also be removed and slid into a grip for handheld video stabilization.

According to Tech Radar, the drone folds up to a small enough size that it can be stashed in a backpack. The outlet notes that the portability of the GoPo Karma is uncommon among premium drones but fits right in with GoPro's other outdoor cameras.

The Verge, which also tested the GoPro Karma, reports that the drone's battery only lasts for about 20 minutes. The battery status is displayed across the top of the device's LCD. Users will know that the drone's battery power is about to run out when the light goes from green to orange to red.

The outlet observed that the GoPro Karma will begin to return to its takeoff spot when its battery has less than four minutes of flight time left. Nonetheless, users can cancel this action and take back control of the drone, though the GoPro Karma will still land itself if the battery power gets too close to empty. Extra batteries for the GoPro Karma are priced between $100 and $150.

Tech Radar says that the price for the GoPro Karma is surprisingly reasonable at $799. This includes the drone, the handheld mount, the controller, the battery, the charger and the backpack case.

The drone can be purchased bundled with a GoPro Hero5 Black for $1099 or with a GoPro Hero5 Session for $999.

The GoPro Karma will be released in the U.S. on Sunday, Oct. 23.
