'Gotham' season 3 episode 12 spoilers: Jerome returns from the dead; Falcone places a hit on Gordon

The return of Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan) is expected when 'Gotham' season 3 returns in 2017. | FOX

A familiar face returns on the upcoming episode of Fox's crime drama "Gotham" season 3.

Titled "Mad City: Ghosts," the show's winter premiere will see things get out of control. According to the official synopsis for episode 12, Falcone (John Doman) puts out an order to kill Gordon (Ben McKenzie) after discovering that he shot Mario (James Carpinello). Gordon and Bullock (Donal Logue) learn about a follower of Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan), who has a sinister plan of bringing him back to life. Elsewhere, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) fails to keep his cool before the biggest television interview of his career as the city mayor. Bruce (David Mazouz), on the other hand, must help Selina (Camren Bicondova) deal with the return of her mother to Gotham.

Over the past few weeks, Monaghan has been teasing his return to fans with a series of buzzworthy photos posted on his social media accounts. Before the holidays, an on-set photo of Monaghan surfaced, and his appearance as Jerome was rather surprising. The image showed Leslie (Morena Baccarin) leaning over Jerome's lifeless body with a tight expression. Considering the winter premiere synopsis, fans can probably understand why the medical practitioner appears to be upset. If someone is making an effort to bring the notorious Gotham villain back from the dead, then bad things surely await her and everyone in the city.

Aside from Jerome, Elijah (Paul Reubens) will also reportedly make an appearance after his death. He died in season 2 after sampling some poisoned wine, but how he comes back remains to be seen. It is believed that Penguin's father will either be resurrected or simply be back for a hallucinatory sequence in the midseason premiere.

The third season of "Gotham" returns on Monday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
