'Gotham' season 3 news: Morena Baccarin teases 'Gotham' love quadrangle
Things are starting to get interesting in "Gotham" season 3 now that the series has reintroduced Dr. Leslie "Lee" Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) and revealed her fiance, Mario Falcone (James Carpinello), the son of mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Doman).
Despite his father's reputation as a feared mafioso in Gotham, Mario has been kept mostly out of the mob life. Like Lee, he is a doctor. While he and Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) met in the episode, it wasn't until later that his family ties and backstory were revealed to Lee. Near the end of the episode, Lee had to promise both Mario and Carmine that she no longer had ties to Gordon.
Lee's return was a surprising one, given everything the former Gotham City Police Department medical examiner endured in the show's previous season. As fans can recall, Lee lost her and Gordon's baby while Gordon was incarcerated. Devastated, she fled south.
But in the second episode of "Gotham" season 3, Lee re-emerged — and with a new man by her side. In an interview with Fox 23, Baccarin revealed that Lee was able to muster the courage to return to Gotham through the support of Mario, her new love.
With Mario present, a "love quadrangle" is formed in "Gotham" season 3. The new season of the Fox crime series has already introduced newcomer Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung), an intrepid reporter whose help Gordon enlists in finding Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith).
"It's like a love quadrangle," Baccarin said. "He's got a love interest as well as Valerie Vale, a news reporter. It becomes really interesting further on in the season when these two women find themselves in the same room together," she added.
In an interview with TV Line prior to the season 3 premiere of "Gotham," McKenzie dished on Gordon's attraction to Valerie, saying, "Jim likes that she's so aggressive, that she's so unapologetic."
But despite the fact that Gordon appears to be falling for the reporter, all may not be lost between him and Lee.
"He's got many battles to fight this year, including a battle for the one he loves," McKenzie teased.
"Gotham" season 3 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.
