'Gotham' season 3 news: Robin Lord Taylor sees Penguin backlash as homophobic

In the latest season of FOX's crime TV show "Gotham," viewers saw Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) develop romantic feelings for Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith). Although some are excited with the show's take on the classic character, some comic book purists are not so pleased with the development. In addition, Taylor is not happy about the fans' backlash.

Taylor reportedly hasn't been too pleased with fans who have expressed complaints and misgivings about the show. During the Rhode Island Comic Con, which was held last Nov. 11-13, the actor told audiences that he didn't believe his character was gay, although he was developing feelings for Ed Nygma. Taylor described his character as a "very emotionally fractured person." The actor said that his character was "emotionally vulnerable" and that he just turned to his closest friend for comfort.

Reports said that when fans complained about Taylor's character, he saw it as an excuse for homophobia. "What you're saying to me is, I am homophobic, and I am afraid of gay people," Taylor revealed, before saying "that is exactly what you're saying."

Taylor previously told Observer Culture that his character's latest development was something he can relate to. The actor said that it sort of felt like coming out again, and that it reminded him of being a fat and gay kid who did theater in Iowa. Once again, the actor expressed that he didn't think his character is actually gay. Nevertheless, Oswald's development is similar to what he has gone through, but on a bigger scale.

To note, Penguin isn't the first character that has received a few tweaks. In FOX's "Gotham," Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Selina Kyle (Carmen Bicondva), and Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) have all received some modifications.

Viewers can catch "Gotham" every Monday at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
