'Gotham' season 3 release date news, spoilers: Reason behind Poison Ivy's recasting revealed; 'Suicide Squad' characters to appear?
For the upcoming third season of Fox's "Gotham," Poison Ivy, who was played in the first two seasons by 14-year-old actress Clare Foley, will be portrayed by 28-year-old Maggie Geha.
While it was previously confirmed that the recasting of Poison Ivy was driven by the need to fast-track her growth into a young lady, the new "Gotham" season 3 synopsis released by Fox provides an insight into the transformation of the child Ivy Pepper (Foley) into the adult Poison Ivy (Geha).
According to the synopsis, Ivy will encounter a monster from Indian Hill and find herself reborn as a young woman who has harnessed the "full power of her charms."
Apart from that, the casting of an older actress for the role may also have something to do with being able to place the character in more adult situations.
In an interview with Den of Geek, "Gotham" executive producer John Stephens explained the decision to recast Poison Ivy. He said, "The mentality of the Ivy we have in our world is not the same as the Ivy who exists in the canon."
"She's a bit more of a loose cannon," he added. "And so she goes and creates a great deal of havoc in our world. And because she is still a 14-year-old, 15-year-old street teenager in the body of a 25-year-old woman, she doesn't know how to act in the world yet, and so she has to fumble her way about," the EP continued.
Meanwhile, with "Suicide Squad" now out, could some of the main characters from the film soon find their way to "Gotham"?
"Not necessarily," Stephens told the press at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour on Monday, Aug. 8 (via Entertainment Weekly). Stephens added that viewers will, however, be seeing proto-versions of some of the "Suicide Squad" characters, including Killer Croc and, possibly, Harley Quinn.
"Gotham" season 3 is set to debut on Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
