'Grey's Anatomy' season 13 spoilers: Shonda Rhimes hints 'interesting' Jackson–April storyline; Meredith and Alex to become a couple?

Relationships will get more complicated when "Grey's Anatomy" returns for the latter half of season 13 next year.

Series creator Shonda Rhimes recently answered some questions from TV Line via e-mail, and she revealed interesting spoilers on what's next for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Alex (Justin Chambers), Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), and the rest of the Grey Sloan staff. Aside from the drama brought by the midseason finale's trial, viewers will see more complicated relationships once the series kicks off for the season's back half.

The show left off with Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April's (Sarah Drew) separation, but they still have a child together who will keep them connected. However, according to Rhimes, the estranged couple's storyline this season will go beyond their decision to part ways.

"This isn't a new issue so we've already seen any and all issues that this might entail," she explained. "It's such a positive thing to watch our characters behave as fully formed adults who know how to co-parent. What's great is that parenting has nothing to do with their storyline this season — it gets much more interesting than you'd imagine," Rhimes went on to say.

The latest episode also saw Meredith doing everything she can to help Alex with his trial. Fans have been wanting to see the duo finally become a couple, but it might be far from happening at this time. "That's like asking me why haven't I had a certain kind of cheese," the creator continued. "The answer is, 'Because I haven't had that kind of cheese,'" she added.

Following Callie's (Sara Ramirez) departure, season 13 saw Arizona become more open to seeing other people. Arizona is currently involved with Eliza (Marika Dominczyk), and fans can't help but compare their relationship to Arizona's dynamic with her ex-partner. Rhimes teased that fans should look forward to how Arizona's new romance will take shape. "I don't look at it in terms of dynamics and I can't possibly compare Arizona and Callie's marriage with what is currently barely a flirtation," she said, adding, "The fun comes with waiting to see what unfolds."

The 13th season of "Grey's Anatomy" returns to the small screen on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
