Rockstar Games has mostly been keeping mum about whether or not it is coming out with "Grand Theft Auto 6," the possible next installment in its lucrative "Grand Theft Auto" video game franchise.

While previous reports indicated that Rockstar may have put the "GTA 6" development on the back burner because the company wanted to focus on "Grand Theft Auto 5," which has been very successful, this may actually be far from the truth. Rather, sources suggested that Rockstar could be fast tracking "GTA 5" so it can finally concentrate on developing "GTA 6."

Neurogadget notes that because the next generation of consoles is expected between 2018 and 2020, "GTA 6" could be released during this period as well. If so, Rockstar only has a couple more years to finish the highly anticipated video game.

Earlier this year, rumors indicated that "GTA 6" could be one of the two projects Rockstar Games is currently working on. The video game publisher has yet to make any official announcements about "Grand Theft Auto 6" and its expected release date.

However, Rockstar Games president Leslie Benzies may have already confirmed that the video game publisher is indeed planning on releasing "GTA 6."

In an interview with Develop back in 2013, Benzies explained the process of developing a video game sequel, saying, "It comes from the idea first."

"Where it is going to be set is the first question," he added. "Then that defines the missions — you're doing different things in L.A. than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in."

"We don't know what 'GTA 6' will be, but we've got some ideas," the Rockstar Games boss said, implying that the installment could be in the very early stages of development.
