'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' premiere date, cast news, spoilers: Sequel to be character-driven, according to James Gunn
The sequel to James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be showing Baby Groot fresh from his pot, and he will be a more evolved character than the original. Meanwhile, the upcoming Marvel film will focus more on each of the character's story.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is slated to premiere this May, and one of the anticipated characters in the film is the reborn Groot. As seen from the movie promo, Baby Groot is just as bad-ass as everyone else is on the team. However, the young tree-looking extraterrestrial being has developed more of a personality than it had in the previous film.
During IGN's set visit to "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," Gunn shared how the character of Baby Groot has evolved from the first film and how his relationship with Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and the other characters has changed.
"He's a little jerk. He can kick some a--. He's also an idiot. He's a baby. He's not very smart. So, he's stupid," Gunn teased.
In "Vol. 2," Rocket will now be protecting Baby Groot, instead of the other way around, which was evident in the first film. Meanwhile, Dave Bautista — who portrays Drax — shared that his character will never get along with Baby Groot, while Karen Gillan's Nebula also doesn't appreciate the youngling. Therefore, conflicts that concern Baby Groot — and possibly his protector, Rocket — can be expected from the film.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be looking deeper into each of the characters' backgrounds, Gunn shared in an interview with Comicbook, but he mentioned that the reveal the much-anticipated identity of Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) father is not in the center of the movie.
"It's not about this big reveal of who the father is. It really is about the story between the different characters, and so it's not about that reveal," Gunn explained.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" premieres on May 5.
