'Hannibal' season 4 news: Creator Bryan Fuller talks about possible revival

Despite being abruptly canceled last year, NBC's criminal drama "Hannibal" might be revived as a potential mini-series in the near future.

Back in June 2015, fans were devastated when the deliciously dark series "Hannibal" was axed by NBC. Creator/showrunner Bryan Fuller and lead actor Mads Mikkelsen have both expressed their interest in coming back for a fourth season since its cancellation, but reviving the show might not be as easy as it seems. Apparently, Amazon currently holds the program's streaming rights, which means Fuller and executive producer Martha De Laurentiis must wait until August next year before they can work out a future for the show.

Fuller recently appeared on Blumhouse's Shock Waves podcast, and he said he is still hoping that he would be able to get the rights to "Silence of the Lambs." The creator went on to say that he believes that there's enough meat on the bone that his new version won't feel like a remake of the cult-classic.

"I think the film adaptation is a perfect film," he stated, "but there's a lot of interesting nooks and crannies to explore in a television series. I hope we get to tell the story," the showrunner went on to say.

In terms of how the possible series will be structured, Fuller explained that they are planning to air a decreased number of episodes compared to the program's usual 13-episode seasons. "I think, ideally for the cast, it would be as a mini-series, here and there. Let's do 6 to 8 episodes of that, and 6 to 8 episodes over here. And do it as an irregular thing."

Following its 2013 debut, "Hannibal" received critical acclaim, particularly for the cast members' performances and the show's overall visual style. Seasons 1 and 2 scored the Best Network Television Series and Best Actor awards from Saturn Awards, while the third and final season gave the show its Best Action-Thriller Television Series award.
