Actress Helena Bonham Carter and Director Tim Burton have split up after spending 13 years together as a couple. The amicable separation happened in the early part of this year but was reported only recently.

News of the split was announced a few days ago by a rep for Carter who said the two "continued to be friends and co-parent their children and we ask that you respect their privacy and that of their children during this time."

Burton, 56, and Carter, 48, became close while working on the film "Planet of the Apes" which he directed in 2001. In that particular film, Carter played one of the apes. They worked together on a number of other films that Burton directed including "Big Fish" in 2003, "Corpse Bride" in 2005, "Sweeney Todd" in 2007, and "Alice in Wonderland" in 2010.

Carter also starred in a number of other films. In the Harry Potter franchise she played Bellatrix Lestrange. She has won a number of awards including BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award during her career which started with the film "A Pattern of Roses."

While Burton and Carter were together, they famously lived in adjoining houses in London. Many described their dressing style and relationship as "quirky." Carter described that the separate houses which were linked allowed them to spend time apart and they only "shared a bed" occasionally because she "has an issue with talking and he with snoring."

Even though the couple split earlier this year, they continued to attend events together. A few weeks ago, they were spotted at "Winter Wonderland." After their split was announced they even took a stroll together with their children Billy, 11, and Nell, 7.
