'Homeland' season 6 air date, plot spoilers: Carrie gets new partner? 'Nurse Jackie' alum heads out to NYC

"Homeland" season 6 is gearing up for an intense run, beefing up its cast for what could be one of the most intense installments to date. The plot for the sixth season will see Carrie Mathison returning to U.S. soil after a stint in Berlin.

Carrie (Claire Danes) will be living in New York, working for a foundation aiding Muslims in the States. The story will pick up during the tense moments following the election of a new president of the United States. The official synopsis shared by Indie Wire reads:

"Season six picks up several months later and finds Carrie Mathison back on American soil, living in Brooklyn, New York. She has begun working at a foundation whose efforts are to provide aid to Muslims living in the U.S. Season 6 will tackle the after-effects of the U.S. presidential election, with the entire season taking place between election day and the inauguration."

"House of Cards'" Elizabeth Marvel will play president-elect Elizabeth Keane while "Prison Break" alum Robert Knepper will appear in a recurring role as General Jamie McClendon, who will represent the Department of Defense and brief the newly elected president and her team.

Aside from the two, Variety has exclusively confirmed that "Nurse Jackie" star Dominic Fumusa is the latest to join the growing cast of "Homeland" season 6. Fumusa will play FBI Special Agent Ray Conlin in a recurring role. However, that's all that's being shared about his character, as other details are being kept under wraps.

Carrie will likewise have a new partner who will work with her as she aids Muslims living in the U.S., according to International Business Times. Patrick Sabongui will play a law professor who's also an advocate for the people of Islam.

Incidentally, executive producer Alex Gansa hinted that the upcoming season of "Homeland" will feature an Iran Nuclear Deal, seeing as how much of that business is conducted in New York City (sanctions and banking), adding that it will be a "fairly big part of the show."

"Homeland" season 6 premieres Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
