'Homeland' season 6 release date, spoilers: Carrie is defiant in new season 6 teaser trailer
The first action-packed teaser for "Homeland" season 6 has just been released and it shows Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) back on U.S. soil and facing new threats in the Big Apple.
After taking on the bad guys in Israel, Puerto Rico, Morocco, South Africa and Germany, "Homeland" season 6 brings the action to New York City, where tension is rising in the period between Election Day and Inauguration Day.
In season 6, Carrie has left Berlin for New York, where she has taken a job at a foundation providing aid to Muslims living in the U.S. But while the former CIA operations officer seems to have settled into a comfortable existence away from the chaos of the intelligence community, she and Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) are once again pulled into a new crisis that rises as a new POTUS prepares to be inaugurated.
Following Election Day, President-elect Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel), the nation's first female president, will have to transition to her new position prior to her inauguration. Keane appears to be bringing with her a new political framework that will put Carrie in conflict with CIA director Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham).
"I don't think you understand how vulnerable you are," Dar told Carrie in the trailer. "I don't think you do," she replied.
"It's an interesting time," "Homeland" showrunner Alex Gansa told E! News. "A transition and transfer of power is happening. In that 72 days, we're hopefully going to tell an interesting story," Gansa added.
According to the showrunner, "House of Cards" actress Marvel will play a President-elect who is "a little bit Hillary Clinton, a little bit Donald Trump, a little bit Bernie Sanders."
Whether she is a villain or a hero — or neither — remains to be seen, but it seems clear that Keane will have a role in the new conflict between Claire and the CIA director, who may be in cahoots with Saul. In addition, Carrie's former boss Otto Düring (Sebastian Koch) is somehow involved, as is Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend), who is still alive.
"Homeland" season 6 debuts Sunday, Jan. 15, at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
