'How to Get Away With Murder' season 3 release date, spoilers news: Annalise to face toughest challenge yet? New season filled with dark secrets?

Set to return this September on ABC, "How to Get Away With Murder" season 3 promises to be filled with suspenseful twists and turns that Annalise Keating and her law student interns will unravel as the season progresses.

Both the lead star Viola Davis, who plays Annalise, and creator Pete Nowalk gave their two cents on the upcoming season and hinted at a big twist, which will be revealed soon. The twist will affect the rest of the series' characters. According to Nowalk, season 3 would be chockfull of dark secrets and mysteries, which Davis believes will implicate everyone in the story right from the season 3 premiere moving forward.

"There's going to be a new mystery and you're not going to have to wait long to find out what that is," Nowalk told E! News during ABC's summer Television Critics Association (TCA) party last Aug. 4. "The first domino was Lila [Megan West] getting killed, so it all stems from there. A leads to B leads to C, and I think we're probably at D at this point and it's going to be the biggest one yet," he shared.

Season 2 ended with Frank Delfino's (Charlie Weber) disappearance and Wallace Mahoney's (Adam Arkin) murder. It was likewise revealed that Wallace was Wes Gibbins' (Alfred Enoch) biological father.

"The instant aftermath is Wes is standing there in his father's blood... We will answer a very important question right when we pick up in the show and then we will move past it," Nowalk told Entertainment Weekly, adding, "It's basically what will happen to Wes in those instant moments and there might be some reveal within that."

Season 3 will slowly shed light on these mysteries while more secrets are also revealed.

Zap2it also reported that in "How to Get Away With Murder's" season 3, Annalise will handle the things she experienced in season 2 such as being blackmailed, shot at, and hit by a car. On the other hand, the Keating 5 would continue facing the challenges brought about by their dark past while also trying to focus on their jobs in order to help their clients.

One of the challenges Annalise might face in the upcoming season is the arrival of her new boss at the university. According to TV Line, Luna (Lauren) Vélez would play the character, which is described as "self-assured, friendly, warm, and diplomatic." Nevertheless, Annalise must be careful not to stir anything lest she finds herself pitted against the new character.

"How to Get Away With Murder" season 3 will air on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
