Insurgent Movie Release Date, Review: Divergent 2 Plot Turns 'Darker, More Adult'

"Divergent" fans should expect a lot of changes when they catch its highly-anticipated sequel "Insurgent" in cinemas this March.

Lead actors Shailene Woodley and Theo James agreed that the second film based on Veronica Roth's bestselling book trilogy has made a turn to darker alleys by the end of "Divergent."

Woodley said her character Tris has been left with a lot of confusion about her future after seeing her parents die and killing one of her friends, according to Entertainment Weekly.

"She's left with a lot of guilt from the war, from losing her parents and from Will, so (in Insurgent) you see a newfound strength in her for revenge, as well as a lot of internal battles that she's trying to weave her way around," Woodley explained.

""This film definitely takes it to the next level as far as the way that they emotionally treat the characters... It's much darker, I would say, just because you see inside of Jeanine (Kate Winslet)'s world, [and] you see inside of Tris' mind a little bit more," she said.

"Tris has a lot of dream sequences that haunt her throughout the film so I think all of those combined lead to a darker tone," she went on.

James, who portrays Four, also thought the second instalment of the sci-fi trilogy has become more adult, which he said made it better than the first one.

"It's more adult. You maintain those elements of the original, but it's also a bit of a bigger and a darker film which I think it lends itself to just being more generally appealing," he said.

Fans should also expect more drama from Four because of his affection and concern for Tris on top of the resurfacing of his mother Evelyn, who will be played by Naomi Watts.

"[In this film], you see a more vulnerable Four... Now, he's in love with this woman (Tris) so he's more concerned about losing her and because she's kind of this self-sacrificing person," James said, according to EW.

"And then with his mother, there's lots and lots of complexity there. I didn't want to push that too hard because I didn't want it to be like, 'Boohoo, poor guy with his parents.' It is there, of course, but it's not like you're going to see him sobbing in the bathroom or something," he added.

In September, new "Insurgent" movie spoilers suggested that there may be a love triangle between Tris, Four and a new character, Edgar.

The rumors went around four months after Lionsgate announced that Jonny Weston will play the new addition to the "Insurgent" cast, Fashion & Style said.

His introduction to the story is said to put a rift between Tris and Four, who will be pushed to his sexy, angry side.
