Intel Compute Card release date, specs news: Credit card-sized computer designed to power smart devices

Intel has recently introduced the Compute Card, a modular compute platform that is small enough to fit inside one's wallet. The credit card-sized device is designed to expand the internet of things (IoT) ecosystem by enabling more smart and connected devices.

"Intel is creating a transformative new product category â€” bringing the power of computing and connectivity to virtually any product, anywhere," says Intel.

The Compute Card will be able to function as a full computer. It will also be offered in a variety of configurations so that it can power not only entry-level devices but also full-featured ones. It will be equipped with an Intel processor including the latest seventh-generation Intel Core and Intel Core vPro processors that are capable of handling complex computing needs. The Compute Card will also have its own random-access memory (RAM), built-in storage and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. All of that is housed in a slim and portable design. The Compute Card is only 95 x 55 x 5 mm in size.

The Intel Compute Card is designed to be flexible so that hardware manufacturers can use it for consumer, business and industrial applications. It can power all-in-one PCs, smart TVs, interactive refrigerators, digital signage, smart kiosks and security cameras. Manufacturers simply have to allot space to the standard Intel Compute Card. This allows them to release different smart appliances or devices without having to spend a lot of time and resources on developing the main compute block. The Intel Compute Card is also very easy to install, maintain and upgrade.

To help turn this idea into reality, Intel has announced that it is working with global partners like Dell, HP, Lenovo and Sharp. Intel has also partnered with regional firms like Seneca Data, InFocus, Contec DTx, TabletKiosk and Pasuntech.

The Intel Compute Card will be available in mid-2017. Specific configurations will be announced close to its official launch.
