iPhone 8 news, rumors: curved OLED display to be made of plastic instead of glass

There is no denying that the upcoming iPhone release is being hotly anticipated with a lot riding on the shoulders of Apple to deliver. Not only does the model have to continue its history of being one of the most after sought-after phones but it also needs to rev up the market because it is the 10th anniversary unit of the device line. Having said that, it is no secret that the internet is abundant with rumors and speculations about the aforementioned gadget.

The latest from the pool of speculations is the tipped edgeless display for iPhone 8. Rumors of the phone coming with curved glass have been going around the rumor mill for quite a while, but it recently picked up steam when a major exclusive from Korea Held provided more details about the plan. As it turns out, the Cupertino-based giant, while pushing forward with the plan, is using a plastic organic light-emitting diode (OLED) for the phone instead of glass. Apple is said to have already ordered the delivery from Samsung who in turn can supply a little less than 100 million units of the organic semiconductor although it was not specified just how many is the American company ordering.

An analysis by Forbes deems the move as bad news as the use of plastic can contribute into the wear-and-tear of the smartphone. Shall this tip eventually come into fruition, users will have to exert extra time and effort to take care of their units as plastic, which is softer than glass, can be easily scratched. This could result in a battered-looking device with dents and scratches just after a couple of months' use depending on how it is kept. On the flipside, however, since it is more malleable, it tends to shatter less likely when dropped.

Prior to this, other notable developments for the iPhone 8 include the release of three variants for the device, all of them sporting curved OLED screen. This forthcoming model line is tipped to come in a new color of hot red. Moreover, one of the variants will cater to the higher-end market as Apple is hard at work on a luxe version of the top-shelf phone.

No official release date for iPhone 8 has yet been disclosed but it is tipped to be rolled out sometime in the third quarter of the year like its predecessors.
