'Iron Fist' release date news: 'Luke Cage' showrunner says show was delayed because of his series
The end of September marks the airing of Marvel TV's "Luke Cage," and next year will have the arrival of another Netflix hero, "Iron Fist." Cheo Coker, showrunner for "Luke Cage," says that his show was the reason why "Iron Fist" got delayed until next year.
In an interview with Complex, Coker reveals that "Iron Fist" was supposed to be released before "Luke Cage," but because Mike Colter's (Luke Cage) appearance in "Jessica Jones" garnered such a positive response, the Marvel higher-ups decided to move the release date of his series earlier.
He says, "Marvel went from, 'We're gonna take our time' to 'Let's flip it and do 'Luke Cage' first,'... 'We've got this great concept and this guy is leaping off the screen, let's follow the momentum.'"
Colter himself was also shocked that the series release date had been accelerated. Coker says, "I called Mike and he's freaking out: 'We're having a baby, my wife's going to leave me!' I had to calm him down."
Some fans have pointed out that having "Iron Fist" delayed may have been the right call since the character has a very similar form of heroism to Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Aside from being blind, Daredevil and Iron Fist fight crime with their martial arts skills.
The teaser for the show, however, seems to imply that Danny Rand (Finn Jones) has some form of super-strength when he walks out of a hole in a wall that he (seemingly) punched.
Speaking of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the two have been a prominent duo in the comics, with both of them being partners for more than a decade. The two represent major trends in the 70s, with Luke being the symbol for the "Black Power" movement and Iron Fist being inspired by the trend of Kung-Fu movies.
Will the pair also form a strong bond in the Netflix series?
"Iron Fist" is slated to come out on Netflix next year.
