Jakell Mitchell Shooting Death: Arrest Made In Case
Jakell Mitchell, who played football for Auburn University in Alabama, was killed early Sunday in a shooting that took place after a party at the infamous Tiger Lodge apartments.
The police arrested Markale Deandra Hart, 22, and subsequently charged him with murder on the same day.
Tiger Lodge apartments was the scene of an earlier shooting that claimed the lives of former Auburn University football players Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips in 2012.
Describing the events leading up to Mitchell's death, his girlfriend Ayanna Hughuley said Mitchell, 18, was having an argument with another man in the parking lot of the Tiger Lodge apartment complex.
While the two were arguing, a third person came up, pulled a gun and shot Mitchell who collapsed to the ground. The assailant then continued pumping bullets into Mitchell's body.
Describing the incident, Hughuley said the gunman "just started shooting and Jakell fell on the ground. Then even as Jakell tried to get back up, he started shooting at Jakell again while he was on the ground."
Reports said the police arrived on the scene and allegedly found the badly wounded Mitchell in the passenger seat of a Cadillac, after which he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police did not confirm whether they found Mitchell inside the car.
Hart reportedly has a criminal past and is currently under detention. Police said no more arrests were expected in the case.
With tensions mounting around the case, Hart claimed that he has received death threats, prompting him to request that he be moved to Tallapoosa County where he can be closer to his family.
