Jeremy Lin news 2016: Nets coach expects Linsanity to drop in for Brooklyn; Can he improve the team's win record?
Jeremy Lin has found a new home in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets, his sixth team in his six-year stint with the pro league. However, there is no denying that his best year was with the New York Knicks, playing alongside Carmelo Anthony.
During Lin's stay with the Knicks, the team had an amazing winning streak, and Lin mostly led the charge, thereby earning him a spot in team's starting lineup. That was when "Linsanity" brought the house down. Still, some good things never last, and before long, the young player was shipped to other teams.
Now, he's given a new lease on life, signing a $36-million contract with the Nets and returning to New York City after a brief stint with the Charlotte Hornets.
According to Nets coach Kenny Atkinson, he wants two things from Lin: time to grow into a positive role with his new team and to be a superstar. Nevertheless, Atkinson wants to tone down expectations, implying that Lin needs time to adjust to his role as point guard for the struggling team.
"[Lin]'s going to have to figure out how best to play in this system," he said, "we're going to have to figure out how to use him."
Still, the coach didn't hold back from saying that he wants the 27-year-old Lin to play like he did during the 2011-2012 season when he was inarguably the best player for the Knicks.
"Obviously, we want him to play like he did when he was in New York for that brief stretch. I'd love that," Atkinson confessed.
The New York Post noted that Lin is a better player now than when he left Knicks to play for Houston Rockets. Apparently, he defends better now, has become a much better ball handler, and improved his basket-penetrating skills, which has always been his strength. Playing alongside Brook Lopez, who could be the perfect pick-and-roll partner for Lin, could bring out the best in him further.
At any rate, Lin has a huge task on his shoulders, as he's expected to help improve the Nets' win record this coming NBA season. Last season, the team only won 21 games, a far cry from two years back when they had gone to the playoffs four straight seasons. Hopefully, with his entry to the team, that track would improve to make the team formidable again.
