Because David Tennant's Kilgrave was such an effective and skin-crawling villain in the first season, it may take more than a single main villain in season 2 to achieve the same effect.

In a recent interview with IGN, "Jessica Jones" creator and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said that Kilgrave was such an iconic villain that the series will not attempt to top or duplicate the character in season 2.

Instead, it now appears that the upcoming season of "Jessica Jones" will take a detour and feature not one, but several, villains.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Rosenberg spoke about the new main antagonist in season 2, saying: "Or antagonists, plural. No one is ever going to beat David Tennant as Kilgrave, so you don't do that. The biggest mistake would be to try to repeat that. You just go, 'OK, we're not doing that, so we have this open to us.'"

However, the "Jessica Jones" boss declined to name the new villain/s, saying that she doesn't want to spoil the surprise.

Meanwhile, in the interview with IGN, Rosenberg explained that the new season of "Jessica Jones" will explore the series' supporting characters. "We can really get into some very interesting aspects of their characters and where they're from, where they're going, all these things."

Speaking with EW, the "Jessica Jones" showrunner revealed that the relationship between Jessica (Krysten Ritter) and Trish (Rachael Taylor) will be one of the main themes of the second season.

"That is the core relationship in the piece," she said. "It is about female friendship, it is about how friends evolve — they're sisters, really — and it's about how they evolve and ping off each other."

When asked about the possibility of the show exploring the romantic side of Jessica and Trish's relationship, Rosenberg said that while she loves that viewers are able to see that in the pair, she's more interested in the two's history, trust, and connection.

The second season of "Jessica Jones" is expected to debut in 2018.
