'Jurassic World' 2 release date news: Director teases sequel in 'Jurassic World' trilogy
The untitled sequel to 2015's "Jurassic World" is the second film in a new trilogy, Juan Antonio Bayona, its director, has confirmed.
"We're very into 'Jurassic World' right now. It's very exciting," Bayona said at the PEOPLE / EW / InStyle Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 10. "[Original director] Colin Trevorrow has envisioned a whole trilogy of films. Very ambitious. And we're writing the second chapter, working very close together," he added.
Bayona, who helmed the films "The Impossible" (2012) and "The Orphanage" (2007), was hired to direct the "Jurassic World" sequel in April this year. He took over from Trevorrow, who was originally attached to the film, after the latter vacated the director's chair to work on "Star Wars: Episode IX."
The upcoming sequel, the fifth film in the "Jurassic Park" franchise, will see the return of "Jurassic World" stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively.
Speaking with LRM, Bayona said that he grew up watching "Jurassic Park" director Steven Spielberg's films and that he loved the "Jurassic Park" trilogy and the legacy of those films. "...So it's a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate," he said. Bayona also revealed that the sequel will begin filming in six months.
While not much is currently known about the plot of the "Jurassic World" sequel, Trevorrow previously said that it could feature open-source dinosaur cloning technology.
Meanwhile, Howard recently spoke about the various memes that have popped up about her "Jurassic World" character Claire and the character's controversial high heels, which she wore the entire time she was running from dinosaurs in the film.
"It's obviously something totally unexpected, and I have a running joke for the rest of my life perhaps," she told The Huffington Post. "I can be one of those people that's constantly referencing it, even 80 years from now," she added.
The untitled "Jurassic World" sequel is scheduled for release on June 22, 2018.
