Superman is turning to the dark side in the upcoming "Justice League."

In a recent Instagram post, "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill, who plays Superman/Clark Kent in the DC Extended Universe films, gave fans a peek at a new — and darker — Superman suit that he is presumably wearing in the highly anticipated film. The Instagram snap, which shows a part of the suit that is all black and intricately detailed, seems to allude to a Justice League storyline straight from the DC Comics.

As fans of the DC comic books know, the popular "The Death and Return of Superman" storyline, which made waves during the early '90s, featured Superman perishing in a battle with Doomsday. While the Man of Steel was "dead," four different superheroes took on the Superman mantle until the real Superman returned. When he rose from the dead, Superman reappeared wearing a black suit with a metallic logo.

The first part of the "Death and Return of Superman" storyline has already played out in the DCEU, with Superman dying in the battle with Doomsday in this year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." But while his loved ones grieved his passing and his sacrifice drove Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) to find the rest of the Justice League, the film hinted at the superhero's eventual return, with pieces of dirt thrown on his casket rising and his heartbeat becoming audible in the movie's final moments.

Cavill's photo of a dark Superman suit gives weight to the theory that when Superman awakens in "Justice League," he will do so as a bad version of himself. In Batman's dream sequence in "Dawn of Justice," The Flash/Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) warns him that he was right about the Man of Steel. It also showed Superman killing people in his rage over Lois Lane's (Amy Adams) death.

Meanwhile, in a recent chat with MTV News, Miller commented on the response to the recently released "Suicide Squad," saying that the film's negative reviews serve as a motivation for the "Justice League" team.

"You needn't look any further than the 'Suicide Squad' director and cast response to the negative reviews to feel how negative critiques motivate us," the actor said. "Ultimately, we can't base anything on [the critical response]. As artists, we aim to please absolutely everybody with our work, but we also know that we have to keep expressing ourselves as best as we can express ourselves."

"Justice League" is scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 17, 2017.
