Kickass Torrents shutdown updates: Alleged KAT owner to remain in prison; new torrent site on the rise
Alleged Kickass Torrents owner Artem Vaulin will remain in prison during the extradition proceedings, as ruled by the Court of Appeals in Warsaw, Poland.
Vaulin's counsel sought for his release on bail as he waits for the extradition hearing and the entire dismissal of the case alleging their client as the owner of Kickass Torrents.
The defendant's team questioned how the crimes being accused by the United States authorities on Vaulin apply under Polish law and stated that he needed urgent medical care for his spinal hernia.
The Court of Appeals ultimately decided to have Vaulin remain in custody for fear that his bail could cause complications with the extradition hearing.
It was ruled that there is enough evidence for the alleged Kickass Torrents mastermind to stay behind bars and that he can get the proper medical attention necessary even when detained.
According to TorrentFreak, Tatiana Pacewicz, Vaulin's Polish counsel, has brought the case to the attention of Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights noting that the rights of the alleged Kickass Torrents brains are being violated.
On top of that, Val Gurvits from Vaulin's counsel in the U.S., also stated that the Polish enforcement has provided the U.S. their client's laptop, which is a piece of evidence in the case, along with his other personal effects without due process.
"We continue to be frustrated by our inability to have an attorney-client meeting with Artem in Warsaw," Gurvits told TorrentFreak.
The extradition hearing will take place later this month and while the wait goes on, the file-sharing community can expect torrent greenhorn 1337X to gain more popularity.
Following the downfall of Kickass Torrents and Torrentz.eu, which were two of the biggest torrent sites before they were shut down, their users were left to find a new home and 1337X was among those that benefited this.
In an effort to get it all the way out there, the people behind 1337X redesigned the site, which should help them gain greater visibility considering the old design had the site predominantly blocked by Google.
Now in the top five most visited torrent sites, 1337X is looking to become one of the biggest players in the file-sharing field and join the ranks of The Pirate Bay in filling the void left by Kickass Torrents and Torrentz.eu.
