LG release date, specs news: case reveals upcoming flagship's design before MWC 2017 launch

Ghostek has unveiled a case designed for LG's upcoming flagship smartphone, the G6. | Ghostek

Just a day after LG sent out invitations for the official debut of the G6 in February, the upcoming flagship smartphone's design has seemingly been revealed ahead of time by a case. The design preview gives consumers a glimpse of what to expect in the forthcoming device.

New York-based case maker, Ghostek, recently put up a listing for the Atomic 3 Series waterproof case designed for the LG G6. While the next-generation smartphone is enclosed by the case, consumers can still get a sneak peek of some of its features.

Photos of the Ghostek case confirm that LG is doing away with the modular design featured in the G5. The South Korean tech giant's current flagship device was praised for its innovative design when it was introduced last year but did not turn out to be a juggernaut when it came to sales. Now, for the G6, LG is returning to a more traditional form factor with a metal unibody and glass design. Nevertheless, the upcoming flagship offering is still expected to have impressive features.

The photos also reveal that the LG G6 will have a dual-camera setup on the back panel. In between the two rear cameras is the device's flash. Then, right below, there is a fingerprint sensor which gives the device an added layer of security. Also, LG has decided to retain the 3.5 mm headphone jack that is recently being omitted by other smartphone manufacturers.

In terms of the device's release date, LG has sent out invitations to a press event titled "See More, Play More," to be held in Barcelona on Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. CET (6 a.m. EST), just a day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC). The invitation is also notably shaped like a smartphone device. Though LG did not outright confirm it, the G6 will most likely be the star of the show.

With the LG G6's official debut a little over a month away, more information about the upcoming flagship device will be revealed in the weeks leading up to MWC 2017.
