'Longmire' season 5 release date, spoilers: Upcoming season may not be the show's last

The upcoming season of Netflix's "Longmire" probably won't be its last.

Despite fans' fears about the possible end of the crime drama, brought on by its previous cancellation at A&E, it now appears that the show will have a future beyond season 5.

Over the past year, the internet rumor mill had been rife with reports that "Longmire" may be getting the axe at Netflix, its second home, and that its upcoming fifth season will be its last hoorah. However, a Twitter post from Lou Diamond Phillips, one of the show's stars, may have debunked the cancellation rumors.

Earlier this month, Phillips posted an on-set snap of himself and some of the "Longmire" cast and crew on what may have been the show's final shooting day.

"It is a beautiful (final) day at the Red Pony and continual soiree...until next season! Big thanks #nmfilm #Longmire," the actor wrote.

After reading his post, many fans were delighted by what seemed to be confirmation that the series will continue on.

In 2014, "Longmire" was cancelled after three seasons at A&E. But after fans clamored for its return, Netflix gave it a new home, ordering 10 episodes that launched on the service in September 2015. A month after, Netflix announced that it had renewed the series for a fifth season.

In November, Phillips spoke to Variety about the move, saying that Netflix is a good place for the series.

"We were previously constrained to 42 minutes and as a result, a lot of my work hit the floor," he said. "With an additional 20 minutes, we can let those moments breathe and round out those characters and it's a much more cinematic experience episode to episode."

The actor also spoke about the show's suspense-filled season 4 finale, which was aired as is even though the series had not been renewed at that point.

"I think that speaks to all of our optimism!" he said.

"Longmire" season 5 drops Sept. 23 on Netflix.
