'Major Crimes' season 5 summer finale recap: Loose ends tied, but what will happen to a character? [SPOILER]
The three-part summer finale of "Major Crimes" season 5 came to a close on Monday, as the episode saw the Dwight Darnell case solved. However, the episode ended on a cliffhanger, and now fans will have to wait for the second half of the fifth season to find out what happens.
Episode 13 titled "White Lies, Part 3" saw major developments where Buzz's (Phillip P. Keene) investigation of his father's death is concerned. The episode likewise saw Sharon (Mary McDonnell) and the Major Crimes Unit gain solid ground in rounding up the loose ends of Dwight Darnell's (Brett Davern) courthouse shooting spree.
In the promo clip for last Monday's episode, Sharon and her team were seen discussing the possibility that something bigger was behind Dwight's actions. It turns out the MCU was right on target. Dwight's biological father, as well as a massive conspiracy, was behind his actions. Unfortunately, the events of episode 13 led to another dangerous end, albeit not as fatal as Russell Taylor's (David Gossett) death in "White Lies, Part 1."
Speaking of Taylor's death, executive producer James Duff explained in an interview with TV Guide that the character's death was about the "balance of power."
"We always try to center our season on a word, and 'balance' has been the word this season. We wanted to end our season meditation on this word by exploring the balance of power, and the best way to do that was to create a vacuum at the top, and watch as people struggle to regain their balance," he said.
Duff was quick to point out that the Dwight Darnell shooting spree will be solved, and that's exactly what happened. Even Buzz's investigation of his father's death was solved, 30 years after the crime. His colleagues arrested Bill Jones for the crime, but in the end, it left Buzz wondering what will happen to Jones' children.
He felt for Jones' children, having gone through the same pain of growing up without a father. However, justice had to be served, even if Buzz and Rusty (Graham Patrick Martin) didn't enjoy the relief they felt afterward.
The episode also shared an emotional scene for Julio (Raymond Cruz) who finally allowed his foster son Marc to leave. Marc already showed an improvement, having spent time with Julio, but things had to happen that way.
Nevertheless, the episode still ended with a cliffhanger when a medical emergency arose for Lt. Andy Flynn (Tony Denison). Now fans will have to wait until much later to find out if he gets to live through the ordeal or not.
In the meantime, keep coming back for more news and updates on "Major Crimes" season 5B.
