'Marco Polo' season 3 air date postponed to 2018? Financial constraints halts production?
Fans waiting for "Marco Polo" season 3 for answers to questions that the season 2 finale dropped might have to wait a tad longer. According to some reports, Netflix is yet to confirm the air date for the third season, and if rumors are proven true, it may not be shown until 2018.
When "Marco Polo" season 2 ended, that future of the Yuan dynasty, as well as that of Kublai Khan, hung in the balance. Now it looks like fans will not find out soon enough what happens next as the streaming giant has decided to postpone the third season's air date.
Apparently, Netflix is not too keen on renewing the series immediately due to its massive production cost. Reports further state that Netflix has no other recourse but to halt "Marco Polo's" production in order to ensure that other shows they stream will be released next year.
Truth be told, "Marco Polo's" production is costly as it gets. For one, it's not filmed inside a studio. According to Deadline, different overseas locations like Malaysia, Italy, and Kazakhstan are used as grand sets to show just how rich and powerful Kublai Khan is.
However, Netflix and The Weinstein Company were able to release the first two seasons of the series one after the other, although production did take some time for both. So Netflix's decision to shelve the show until 2018 may not necessarily be due to financial constraints but because of the network's lineup of shows for 2017.
Currently, the roster of Netflix's biggest hits and new major projects set for a 2017 release include "Stranger Things" and at least three new shows from Marvel, including "Iron Fist," The Punisher," and "The Defenders." All four titles have been added to the streaming giant's roster of shows for 2017, but "Marco Polo" season 3 was significantly left out of the list.
As per reports, there's a possibility that Netflix is waiting until 2017 to release the actual release date of "Marco Polo" season 3, perhaps around the time that production for the series starts. If filming begins sometime in 2017, then a 2018 release should be expected.
