Marvel, Netflix hacking news: OurMine tests security of high-profile Twitter accounts

Hacking group OurMine recently hacked the Twitter accounts of Netflix, Marvel, and various Marvel-affiliated accounts on the social media platform.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, OurMine took control of Netflix's Twitter account and posted a tweet informing the company's 2.4 million followers about Twitter's and Netflix's lack of security.

"Hey, it's OurMine, Don't worry we are just testing your security, contact us to tell you more about that contactourmineteam@gmail.com," OurMine tweeted using Netflix's Twitter account.

According to Polygon, Netflix eventually managed to gain control over its Twitter account and deleted the tweets posted by the hacking group on its page. However, OurMine didn't stop there and set out to hack another target: Marvel.

Later in the day, OurMine hacked into Marvel's main Twitter account (with almost 4.4 million followers) as well as the social media accounts associated with the company. Twitter accounts for "Captain America," "Iron Man," "Thor," "Ant-Man," "Doctor Strange," "Black Panther," and Marvel Music were all compromised.

Once again, OurMine explained in brief Twitter posts on each account that they were simply testing the security (or lack thereof) of the social media accounts under Marvel's control. Within minutes, Marvel quickly regained control of its accounts and deleted the hacking group's tweets. The tweets can no longer be found on Marvel's Twitter feeds, but some Twitter users have managed to take screenshots of the posts.

As reported by Variety, this is not the first time that OurMine took control of high-profile Twitter accounts. It previously targeted the social media accounts of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and even Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

OurMine is believed to test social media accounts for vulnerabilities and for the use of weak passwords, according to Tech Crunch. They either take over the targeted Twitter account directly or exploit them indirectly by pushing contents to its connected apps and services.

Despite the impressive skills of the hacking group, OurMine has never caused any lasting damage on the social media accounts that they have chosen to hack.
